Albert Street Prawn Noodles is one of the first names that come to mind when you mention prawn mee in Singapore.
They've been around since 1963 and have a rich history of over 60 years. If you haven't seen them at Old Airport Road Food Centre, you'd probably have chanced upon them in the media — they've been featured quite a number of times!
Apart from a basic bowl of prawn noodles, they also sell more premium versions such as Big Prawn Noodles, which come with larger and meatier prawns.
If you want more variation in your dish, you can go for the Clam Prawn Noodles, Abalone Prawn Noodles or Pork Ribs Prawn Noodles. Love intestines? and Pig's tail? They have those options too!
Signature
Singapore is no short of prawn noodle stalls but this is by far one of my favourite places.
I came on a Monday evening and there was only one other customer in front of me in the queue. I ordered myself a bowl of their Pork Ribs Noodles and opted for the medium size ($9).
As the noodle options went up to an extra large size ($22), I didn't expect my $9 bowl to be that large. But boy was I wrong — it was massive!
You can chose what noodles you want so I opted for a classic yellow mee. This was paired with pieces of halved prawns (which makes peeling much easier!) as well as thick pork ribs. All this was doused in a heavenly umami-packed broth that smelled and tasted absolutely divine — you can tell that the soup had been simmering for some time to achieve such a rich flavour!
Many prawn mee places I've been too give scrawny, shriveled up pieces of prawn and pork ribs but the ones here were gloriously meaty and had plenty of bite. This bowl of noodles was worth every cent!
