If the name of the stall sounds familiar to you, it probably is because it was named after the famous comic character from Hong Kong called Lau Fu Zi. They even have figurines of the character in the stall! It’s run by Mdm Kueh who has owned the store for three decades. She learned how to fry kway teow from her master who once also owned a stall at Old Airport Road before eventually carving out a path for herself. The char kway teow here is so good that it draws snaking queues even before the lunch and dinner crowds come in and you can expect a 20 minute to 40 minute wait for your food. They do give out queue numbers so you can wait somewhere else instead of crowding up the front of the store.

I made the mistake of coming during the peak dinner period so I had to wait almost 40 minutes for my food. The queue did get a bit messy but it was understandable since everyone was eager to get some of the noodles. It comes in black and white versions and I got the black which means that the noodles are cooked in dark soya sauce. The dish was served to me in grease-proof brown paper instead of a plate which was surprising, but I guess it did help since so many people were opting for takeaway. I was never a fan of char kway teow but I think the one here changed my mind because I’ve been craving for it ever since I ate it. The wok hei was extremely strong yet the noodles were not too greasy and did not leave oil slicks on my mouth.
