Mention old-school western food and one place that first comes to mind for many Singaporeans is Western Barbeque at Old Airport Food Centre.
The family-run business has been around since 1974 and is currently run by second-generation owners, Derek Lim and his sister. Derek and his sister both left their corporate jobs to continue their father's legacy.
The stall sells the usual suspects like Chicken Chop, Fish and Chips and Pork Chop. Apart from that, they also have more premium offerings like Lamb Chop and Sirloin Steak. Can't decide between all the option? Get the Mixed Grill which comes with a bit of everything!
It isn't surprising that Western Barbeque has a steady stream of customers and when I visited them one weekend, my order took some time.
Nonetheless, it was very worth the wait. I ordered the Mixed Grill as I had a hard time deciding between Chicken Chop, Lamb and Pork Chop.
The meats were all grilled to perfection and while I was expecting it to be on the tougher side, these were all surprisingly tender.
What really makes the dish stand out from their competitors is the use of garlic sauce. This added a nice sweet and spicy kick to the dish and I foudn myself using the provided bread to mop up all that gravy.
Each plate of meat also comes with a side of fries and coleslaws like every classic old-school establishment. Overall, it was a very hearty meal and I'm already thinking of my next visit back!
