Let's share! |
97 Nasi Lemak first became famous when a netizen shared that the owner, Ellis Phua, looked a little like Taiwanese-born actress Vivian Lai. Ellis set up the stall around last year at Old Airport Road food centre and previously, she worked as a sales and operations executive for an F&B company and a fashion wholesaler.
After her beloved mother passed away, Ellis wanted to share the memories of her mother’s cooking, so she signed herself up for the Hawker’s Development Programme, where she apprenticed for eight weeks.
Not only has her nasi lemak received high praises from its customers — just check out their online reviews! — it’s friendly on the wallet too. You can get a plate of nasi lemak for just $2.60, which is quite a steal in these times! As business has been good, she has now expanded her stall at Old Airport Road and now owns the unit besides her as well.
I visited the stall right before it blew up and became famous and was instantly intrigued by how affordable the food here is — everything cost between $2.60 to $3.50! I eventually settled on Set C, which is the chicken wing set. This only set me back by $2.90, which is truly a steal!
The set came with a pile of fragrant coconut rice paired with a fried egg, chicken wing, sambal, ikan bilis and nuts as well as some cucumber to cut through the greasiness. I really really loved the chicken wing here — it was perfectly fried and crisp without too much excess oil, yet the flesh of the chicken was tender. The sambal also hits all the right spots and was a good balance between spicy and sweet. Coconut rice was also light and fluffy without being too greasy on the palate. For the price point, I’m really quite blown away. I can see why the food here is so popular!
