Establishments that sell curry in Singapore are a dime a dozen and almost every hawker centre in Singapore has one specialising in it, whether it be Malay, Chinese or an Indian stall.
But unless you're dining in a tze char restaurant, it is rare to see curry served in a claypot.
Cue Hock Shun Traditional Homemade Curry, a humble stall at Redhill Market that specialises in curry, which they serve up in their iconic personal-sized claypots. While it is a rather traditional dish, the owners of the stall are a young and polite couple in their 30s.
Their menu is simple yet substantial — they have curry with either chicken wings, drumsticks, fish or mixed vegetables. These can be paired with a carb of your choice such as bread, white rice and tumeric rice.
I came here on an early weekend afternoon and the stall had already attracted quite a lengthy queue. It took me about 15 minutes to order and wait for my food to be prepared. But the folks manning the stall were very fast and efficient despite there being so many people ahead of me.
Be careful when handling your claypot! I accidentally touched the side of it when I was adjusting it and burned myself! But this is also good as the claypot kept the food warm for a very long time, even when I was almost done with my food.
The curry is Chinese-style and was one of the creamier curries I've had in Singapore. I was also surprised by the amount of ingredients in it, especially considering that I had only paid $6.80 for my food!
I also paid my meal with some tumeric rice, a first for me. This was light, fluffy and very fragrant — the perfect pairing with a piping hot bowl of curry! And can I just say that the chicken was so tender? I ordered the drumstick and the meat literally fell off the bone!
