Bossi Ban Mian is located at Serangoon Garden Market & Food Centre and specialises in Hakka-style ban mian. Initially, the stall was located at Seletar Market before the hawker centre closed down and back then, it was run by just the mother. The current stall at Serangoon Garden Market & Food Centre is mainly run by her son, 38-year-old Chin Chun Yoong. where he uses his mother’s recipe but tweaks it a little to suit his customer’s tastes. There are only three items on the menu — noodle soup, dry noodle and signature noodle. You can also choose to add on your preferred ingredients like prawns, fish, clams and even sliced abalone.
I ordered the dry version of their signature noodles ($8) and was super impressed by how the dish was presented! The bowl came loaded with chewy handmade noodles and topped with plump scallops, abalone and a large prawn. I was really impressed by the abalones — these weren’t your usual mock abalones and were real ones. Considering that, the price point was more than justified and I would even be willing to fork out more than $8 for this dish. The noodle texture was fantastic as well, very chewy and al dente. Before eating, toss the noodles with the dark sauce, chilli, minced meat and chye poh. The chilli is also another game-changer and provides a fiery kick to the dish. Those with low spice tolerances should be warned though — it’s really quite spicy!
