There are two Hill Street Char Kway Teow stalls in Singapore —one in Bedok and one at Chinatown— and both are equally famous.
The Bedok stall is run by the original hawker's son while the one at Chinatown Complex Food Centre is run by the owner himself, Tan Chiang Boo. Both stalls were once part of the now-demolished Hill Street Food Centre.
Back then, the Bedok stall was located at the ground level of the two-story food centre while the Chinatown stall was on the second level.
Tan Chiang Boo himself has been cooking char kway teow since he was just 17 years old so he sure knows what he's doing at the wok.
Be prepared for long queues because everyone wants to try his char kway teow!
When I reached the stall on a weekend afternoon, there was, as expected, a snaking long queue.
I stood in line for around 20 minutes and finally, it was my turn. They only have one menu item —char kway teow— in two sizes. I got the $4 portion.
I can see what the hype is about. The char kway teow had a good amount of wok hei and the noodles were chewy and coated well in the sauce. The dish was loaded with ingredients like egg, vegetables, lup cheong and cockles.
I would definitely queue for this again!
