Chwee Kueh is quite the common stall found in most food centres, but the famous ones like this, Bedok Chwee Kueh are located in several locations in Singapore, with one at the Chinatown Complex Food Centre.

This Teochew-style steamed cakes with chai-poh (preserved radish) may seem like a simple dish, but not only does it take long hours to make, this simple dish is a delicious meal that fills the tummy and satisfy the souls. When done right, 4 little rice jewels aren’t going to be enough for all. If you are a spicy lover, then make sure to add chili over the chai-poh for an added oomph.

The preserved radish is chopped into small bits, stewed in vegetable oil, garlic, dried shrimps, sauce, sugar and shallots. Depending on which outlet you get your chwee kueh from, the chai-poh also differs – from the texture, the taste and even how soft the rice cake is. The Bedok outlet is one of the best, so if that’s what you are craving and happen to be around Chinatown, this is your best bet.

I ordered 4-piece chwee kueh for my morning breakfast at about 9.30am. There isn’t a crowd nor a queue, so I didn’t have to wait long for my meal. The chwee kueh itself was soft and warm, easily cut by the plastic fork, but not brittle that it breaks by itself. Picked radish was also generous enough that it could cover all four of the chwee kueh. It had just the right amount of crunch and sweetness to complement the overall palate.

The chilli, however, was a little oily and less than expected. For someone who loves the chili with her chwee kueh, I had to ask the stall owners for a little more. Whether or not you are eating in or dining out, you would just receive a packet for easy serving. You can also opt for cold ones (to steam them yourself), and the stall owners will gladly oblige.
