Fatty Ox Hong Kong Roast Duck has humble beginnings in the 1980s and is helmed by Hong Kong-born hawker Cheung Sun Kwai.
Chef Cheung actually first moved to Singapore in the 80s to work at a Hong Kong chain eatery called Mayflower Restaurant and he ended up relocating here.
After 2 years, he left the eatery to open his own hawker stall on Pagods Street in Chinatown. Eventually, he upgraded it into a family-style zi char eatery at Murray Street in the 90s to 2009 but the landlord ended up selling off the shophouse it was in.
That was when the chef and his wife decided to go back to the hawker scene and then started a stall at North Bridge Road before moving to Chinatown Complex Food Centre.
They've also recently opened a new restaurant across the street from the hawker centre he's in.
Alas, when I visited the stall one weekend morning around 12.30pm, I was happy to see that the stall was open but this soon changed to disappointment as I learned that they had already sold out of beef brisket and duck! No wonder there was no queue. Still, I really wanted to try their food and ended up ordering some soya sauce chicken noodles.
I've had a lot of good soya sauce chicken in Singapore, especially at Chinatown Complex, where Fatty Ox is housed it. And it did not disappoint!
The noodles were springy and tossed in a fragrant sauce while the chicken was so tender and juicy! My only gripe is that the portion size is on the smaller end.
