Nestled at Lorong 1 Toa Payoh, the area is a rather small hawker centre compared to the large food centres we see around Singapore. However, it’s safe to say that some of the best and good food stalls are here. One of it is Da Cheng Kway Chap.
Kway Chap is a traditional Teochew cuisine served in a bowl of thin large rice sheet in a dark savoury broth, along with a plate of a variety of pig’s innards, braised egg and meat. For those who love these innards, one would definitely enjoy their meal at Da Cheng Kway Chap. The stall has a variety of braised ingredients and add-ons if you fancy. Apart from Kway Chap, the stall also sells Pig Organ soup and yam rice options.
The stall owners work rather quickly, serving up bowls after bowls at a great speed to ensure the queue gets shortened. The price for a bowl of Kway Chap is affordable as well!
If you can handle a little bit of spice, remember to take the chilli for that extra kick of spice and acidity to your overall palate.
Homely Kway Chap is what I’ll describe the dish at Da Cheng Kway Chap. It’s not the greatest dish of kway chap, but it’s one that I’ll return anytime for it. It serves a variety of innards, even pig’s tongue, which is quite a rare ingredient for kway chap.
Most importantly, the innards and offal are very clean and had no odour. The kway isn’t too salty and has a very smooth texture. It doesn’t break easily when scooped, and the broth-soup is tasty as it is.
To add on, the price is affordable and a clean environment to dine in. The queue can be quite long during peak lunch hours (closed during dinner hours) but you don’t have to wait too long for it. The location can be quite a walk away from the train station, but overall, a worthy trip for a bowl of kway chap.
