Teochew porridge is always seen as a comfort food for many people, and like a Chinese tradition eating together as a family, having Teochew porridge pushes that tradition further.
It’s hard to say how many side dishes they are, but a good guess is about 20-30 dishes including meat dishes, vegetables, fish, seafood, braised innards, egg, peanuts, etc. The main carbs are usually a watery kind of porridge, or a bowl of rice. This also means that when it comes to pricing, there isn’t really a fixed amount as the stall owners count it after you are done with selecting your dishes. The more expensive and popular ones are usually the fish, seafood, and meat dishes. There were already 3 people squeezing in the small stall area and the dishes were overflowing all around.
Fuji Duck Teochew Porridge is a popular stall Toa Payoh and so do expect a long queue, especially during the prime lunch and dinner times. I was the 8th person in the queu and waited about 30 minutes for my turn. It’s not a cheap dish considering it’s at a hawker centre, but it’s worth it.
For a 1-person meal, I was spoilt of choice, but since the name of the stall had ‘duck’ in it, I figured it was their specialty and so I ordered a plate of duck meat, on top of a plate of spicy minced meat.
The porridge is a small bowl of watered-down porridge, as compared to the Cantonese kind of thick congee. It may seem like a small bowl but with the dishes, but I was full after my meal. I actually loved the braised duck and because it is so strong in flavour and the sauce was a little salty, it went really well with the plain porridge. The minced meat also added texture and spiciness to it.
If I was there with a group of people, I’ll definitely go for more side dishes to pair with my porridge but because I was afraid I couldn’t finish my food. Though the wait was long, it was worth it wait.
