Toa Payoh is quite known for its many hawker centres and Lorong 8 has a whole range of stalls that people flock to for lunch and dinner. But this stall is quite unique to many hawker centers. Scissors Cut Curry Rice has its own flair of messiness, tastiness and the texture of having thick gravy all over your rice.
Like most of the curry rice stalls, you choose your ingredients – whether is it vegetables, meats, seafood or egg-related dishes along with your rice. And of course, lastly, a generous amount of sweet-spicy curry drizzled – or poured – over your rice. Pretty sure it’s safe to say that ‘the messier, the better’. Think of it as an in between of a sauce and a soup – that’s how much the curry should be on our plate of decadent food. Not forgetting the last step of having a pair of scissors, cutting right through the ingredients and rice for bite-sized bits.
The only thing about pointing ingredients is that there isn’t a fixed price to it – as the amount of food is usually decided by the staff picking your food. Lucky for this stall, the stall owner was rather friendly, making it an easy and smooth process for lunch.
Like most curry rice, I wouldn’t say that the curry was super spicy as it shouldn’t be. There was a tinge of sweetness to it, but more importantly, the creamy texture that blends really well with the rice, as well as that kick of spice that elevates the dish. It should also be rather light but this stall had a heavier and richer taste to it. I wished I had more gravy because it essentially should have overflowing curry with each spoon.
In terms of ingredients, I thought it was nothing over the top special, but a good and decent enough food that makes me happy. Vegetables was fresh and always go well with curry, and a protein option that gives that chewy texture, adding an additional layer to the overall palate. The saltiness of the vegetable and pork also makes it a comfort food for your meals. Just note that if the end product comes out as a beautiful mess, you know that’s going to be tasty meal.
