One of the popular stalls at Toa Payoh Lorong 8 Hawker Centre, the Serangoon Garden Fried Prawn Noodle is actually a popular stall that is often seen with queues. Don’t be fooled by the name of the stall, because it can be quite confusing seeing that it is now located at Toa Payoh instead. With the magazine clippings and photos around the stall, in addition to the TV show series, you can trust this stall to serve up pretty good plates of Hokkien mee.
The stall owners are really friendly and only starts cooking per order. When I was 2nd in line, I didn’t have to wait too long for my plate. Queues started to form pretty quickly behind me as well. The portions of ingredients are portioned neatly into different plastic cups and divided according to the price denominations. Price-wise, it’s an affordable plate with all the ingredients in it.
There are many Hokkien Mee or Fried Prawn Noodle stalls around Singapore and it’s hard to choose a favourite one, but this stall does serves up a pretty decent plate and stands among one of the better ones on this island.
After all, with the years of experience and fervent followers, this is one of the stalls that serves Hokkien Mee with a wet broth. For my $3 plate, it was enough for one person, with prawns, squid, eggs, pork slices and lard pieces. The broth is flavourful and sweet, with the chilli-lime, it gives an added layer of spice and a hint of sourness to the overall palate.
While there are many other food stalls at this hawker centre, do give this one a try when you are there.
