Located at the bustling Hong Lim Market and Food Centre, Famous Sungei Road Trishaw Laksa has been drawing in crowds for two decades. But they didn’t start off so well. The owner, Daniel Soo, says that initially, their stall was overlooked and their business was poor for quite some time. Prior to this, he had spent most of his life apart from his family abroad for work before settling down in Singapore to start a laksa store with his wife. However, his sincere attitude helped him get through the tough times and eventually, business became better. He even came up with the laksa recipe himself through research and customer feedback. Despite the store having the name ‘Sungei Road’ in its title, his stall is actually not from Sungei Road and Daniel named it such to pay tribute to the style of laksa that was made popular by the food vendors at Sungei Road 50 years ago.

Famous Sungei Road Trishaw Laksa is famous for its laksa that is laced with fruit juice so of course, I had to try that. Daniel says that unlike other laksa stalls, he uses less coconut milk and the result is a rich yet not too heavy gravy. He also makes sure that it is not too spicy and customers can adjust the dish to their preferred level of spiciness by adding the provided chilli to their taste. I definitely could taste that in the laksa and it was on the lighter side, which I found refreshing. It also includes fresh ingredients like beansprouts, fried beancurd puffs, egg, chicken and of course, his special ingredient — fruit juice. Overall, if you hate the cloying taste of a classic bowl of Singapore laksa, I feel that this may be more up your alley.
