Whampoa Satay Bee Hoon has been around since 2008 and the founder passed on the business to the current owner, Mr Tang, who has been running the show for around 10 years. Occasionally, his daughter helps him out at the shop when she is free and has no school. Before this, Mr Tang actually worked at a ban mian stall around Bugis cooking dishes like ee mian, so the switch was quite a vast difference. Apart from satay bee hoon, he also sells other dishes such as laksa that start from just $3 per bowl.
I am quite a fan of satay bee hoon and since places that sell it are so rare these days, I was admittedly very excited to try it the ones they sold here. I got a $4 plate of it and it features a bed of been hoon doused in a thick, textured gravy packed with ingredients such as vegetables, meat (which I think is pork slices?) and cockles. The sauce had a tinge of sweetness to it which I really like and had plenty of bite thanks to the crushed peanuts in it. The ingredients were also fresh and aplenty so you get something with every bite. Would come back for it when I'm craving for this hard-to-find local dish!
