Fried Oyster Omelette is basically a dish with fried egg, starch batter, as well as small oysters mixed in the dish. Many people also go for this dish, paired with the special spicy-sour chilli that elevates the overall palate.
Whampoa Traditional Fried Oyster serves both fried oysters and oyster omelette. While both may sound rather similar, the way and style it is being cooked is different for the fried oyster option is served with the additional of the tapioca starch that makes up the chewy bits.
The stall at Whampoa Market packs a variety of food options to satisfy even the harshest food critic, and to stand out with a dish isn’t easy. For a stall that predominantly only sells 1 type of dish, competition is tough and we have the delicious food to thank.
Even though there wasn’t a queue per se, there was a steady stream of customers ordering their food every now and then. The stall owners are a friendly duo – probably husband and wife who mend the stall together. If you are seated nearer to their stall, they will even deliver your order straight to your table.
Fried Oyster is one of my personal favourite hawker food. For one, I love oysters and when done right, Orh luak is a dish I’d always recommend to my tourist friends.
The tapioca starch bits does have quite a bad name for many people feel that it ‘fills’ the plate and tummy more than the main ingredient – oysters should be. However, these chewy batter adds a layer of texture and it really goes well with the oysters and chilli. For the fried egg, it’s the crispiness that completes this dish.
Freshly made to order, the oysters are even though small, was rather fresh, chewy and have that tad oozy taste when bitten into. When it comes to the chilli, I ordered the stall’s special chilli sauce, and I’d say it was spicier than your normal orh luck chilli, so for those who loves a kick, do try this option instead.
