While Whampoa Market isn’t quite the most convenient food centre there is as it is not directly linked to an MRT station, there are still a lot of patrons at this food centre, mainly from the people around the neighbourhood.

When it comes to the price point, it is of course, cheaper than the restaurant, but one can expect to queue for a longer period of time, and without the luxury of an air-conditioned environment.

Whampoa Market isn't the cleanest hawker centre of all, and is often spotted with a lot of people and can be quite dirty at times, but there is a good variety of stalls offering different food options. So, to have Loy Kee Chicken Rice there, it does attract a huge crowd and queue, especially during meal times.

Authentic Hainanese chicken rice is made from scratch, and the chicken - both roasted and steamed chicken is cooked for long hours.

Also, chilli. No one takes chicken rice without chilli, so remember the spicy-slight pungent garlic chilli.

Chicken rice is the one dish Singapore is known for, and to have it at local hawker centres, Loy Kee is quite the place to go to.

There are a couple of chicken rice stalls all around Singapore, and some are also awarded accolades. For Loy Kee, it's about the household brand name that your parents swear by, and there is absolutely every reason to believe them.

I usually go for steamed chicken, and within minutes, I was presented with a plate of goodness. The rice is grainy and fragrant, where each grain is just slightly coated, making it smooth and lovely. The chicken is soft, tender and fresh. It doesn't peel off when scooped, but breaks when bitten into it.

The chilli and dark sauce is also a great flavour and texture added to complement the dish. If you are into spice, you have to take the chilli, the spicy kick is one that makes Loy Kee such as a well-loved dish.
