The founder of Lixin Teochew Fishball Noodles first started the business from a pushcart.
He would travel all the way to the fishery port in Jurong just to buy freshly caught yellowtail fish. Then, he would spend six hours painstakingly preparing the fish just to make his fishballs. And the most impressive part of this was that everything was done by hand!
In the 70s, Mr Lim set up his first stall at Bedemeer Road Hawker Centre with his wife. It was later demolished so the business was moved to Toa Payoh, where the original stall still stands today.
They opened their next outlet at Ion Orchard Road Food Opera in 2009 with their son, Eddie, and they went on to open ten more outlets in air-conditioned food courts across Singapore!
But despite the expansion, the fish products are all still prepared with fresh ingredients and yellowtail fish. These are all made in the central kitchen to maintain quality throughout the various outlets.
I've been wanting to try Lixin Teochew Fishball noodles for the longest while but never had enough time to head down to their outlet at Toa Payoh. So, I tried their second outlet at Ion Orchard Road!
There was a small queue at the stall despite me coming down at an odd hour of 3pm. But I managed to get my food pretty quickly.
And while this is not the original stall, I was genuinely shocked at the quality of food.
For one, the noodles had an excellent, al-dente bite and the spicy, savoury sauce it was tossed in complemented it perfectly.
I was also thoroughly impressed with the star of the show — the yellowtail fish products. These were uber juicy and had a good bite to them — you can really tell that these were handmade!
