Ya Kun started out as a humble coffee stall by Loi Ah Koon, who came from China to Singapore.
He partnered with two other Chinese immigrants and they set up shop at Telok Ayer Basin. However, these partners eventually left and Ah Koon was left on his own. But he succeeded and also got help from his wife.
After over 15 years at Telok Ayer Basin, he relocated across the street to Lau Pat Sat. In 1984, the stall moved back to Telok Ayer Transit Food Market while Lau Pa Sat was revamped.
The original stall eventually moved to Far East Square and Ah Koon's children have taken over the reins to expand the business across Singapore.
Now, Ya Kun Toast can be found almost everywhere on our sunny little island!
When it comes to breakfast food, Ya Kun Toast is a go-to spot for Singaporeans.
When I visited the store, it was surprisingly crowded and I had to wait a while for a seat.
While I wanted to try their other menu items, I ended up gravitating back to my usual order of kaya toast set with a cup of tea.
This really hits the spot. The creamy, sweet kaya jam coupled with the slab of butter provides such a nice contrast to the toasty, crispy bread.
I'm one of the many people who enjoy dunking the toast in my runny egg. Don't forget to add soy sauce and white pepper to your eggs too!
And to wash it all down, a fragrant cup of tea. Singapore breakfast is truly the best.
