“Flor” is a Portuguese word for ‘Flower’ and like flowers, the patisseries displayed on their shelves are beautiful, colourful and just pretty to look at. Flor Patisserie serves Japanese-inspired French pastry. Chef Yamashita Masataka trained at Japan’s prestigious culinary institute, the Tsuji Culinary Institute and has worked as a pastry chef in Japan for many years.
The outlet at Duxton Hill is a quaint little cafe where most people head there for their sweet desserts. One of their popular cakes is the Strawberry Shortcake and mango souffle. Baked daily to maintain its freshness, expect a worthy indulgence that will turn any sweet naysayers to an instant fan. No artificial ingredients or softening agents are used in the process and you can tell by the quality of the cakes and desserts.
The company is also doing their part in sustainability, no longer providing single-use plastics for takeaways. So remember to bring your own bag and prepare your own knife when you head there the next time!
It was definitely felt like a reward to self, or like an once-in-a-while indulgence because their desserts aren’t exactly cheap. However, I do not deny the quality of their desserts and I thought it is really worth every penny. I ordered a slice of the Strawberry Short cake and the Gula Melaka Brown Sugar Roll Cake. These two are known to be the more popular choices among customers there. One thing’s for sure - it isn’t too sweet. That’s a good thing in my opinion where the both cakes had just the right amount of sweetness and lightness that I could gobble up the entire thing myself.
The Strawberry Shortcake had a light and sponge cake layer that just cuts evenly with a fork. The cream is light and smooth, and when paired with the sweet strawberry slices, it’s just like a celebration in your mouth. The sugar roll is a little denser on the texture, with a hint of that deep coconut sugar sweetness. It’s hard not to like the sweet and exquisite desserts from this bakery, and I am pretty sure I’ll be finding myself trying out the other desserts there in no time.
