This is the 2nd outlet of this eatery - the other at Bedok, serving affordable and tasty Bak Kut Teh soup, with other dishes like vegetables, dough fritters and braised egg. The eatery is founded by Mr Jabez Tan who was put behind bars for his drug offences. In 2003, he turned his life around by starting off as a kitchen dishwasher and slowly worked his way up to be a culinary chef. And in 2011, he made up his own Bak Kut Teh recipe that is loved by many today. Soon Huat is a well-known social enterprise that actively hires ex-offenders.

The dining area is a non-air-conditioned place so expect to see flies and mosquitoes around, especially after a downpour. However, if that doesn’t bother you, then you’ll find that it’s a great place for families and friends to get their nice Bak Kut Teh fix. Served in a pipping hot claypot, it comes with other ingredients like intestines, livers, mushroom and fried tau kee.

Signature

Abalone Bak Kut Teh

I absolutely loved my meal at Soon Huat, despite the unwanted flies and mosquitoes disturbing me. The staff were friendly and I was happy to be served my Bak Kut Teh rather quickly. It is not surprising to have Bak Kut Teh in a claypot, but to have other of my favourite ingredients like pig innards and fried tau kee all in the herbal soup was definitely something I adored. I also ordered the tau pok (fried beancurd) on the side, along with a plate of vegetables.

The soup had strong herbal hints without it becoming too overpowering, a little stronger on the peppery taste would be ideal, but I didn’t mind the taste as it was. I’d definitely recommend eating with a friend because it can be too much for 1 person. Soup is refillable, so don’t worry about not having enough to go around. The meat of the pork ribs was tender and chewy, and like all my bak kut the dishes, a dip in cut chill-dark sauce is the best combination.

As I’m typing this, I am already planning for my next trip to Soon Huat!
