Din Tai Fung was founded by Yang Bing-yi, and immigrant from Shanxi, China. He worked a decade at a cooking oil retailer in Taiwan and eventually, he wanted to branch out and start his own business as an oil retailer. He named his company Din Tai Fung.

When popularity for oil dropped, Yang was advised to open a restaurant instead to survive. He converted his shop into one that sold xiao long bao and it soon became such a hit that he stopped selling oil all together.

The business soon expanded overseas and you can now enjoy Din Tai Fung in countries like Singapore, Japan, Thailand, South Korea and The United Kingdom. They also have stores in Malaysia selling halal versions of their popular dumplings.

Signature

Steamed Chilli Crab & Pork Bun (1/ 3pcs), Steamed Vegetable & Pork Dumplings (6/ 10pcs), Xiao Long Bao (6/ 10pcs)

A meal at Din Tai Fung is always a treat because their xiao long baos are truly one of the best!

I visited their Suntec City outlet on Chinese New Year and was surprised to see that they were open during the festive period.

Din Tai Fung is known for their xiao long baos and fried rice and while I still got their xiao long baos, I decided to try their noodles instead of the fried rice. These were paired with a light pork rib soup and were so chewy and delicious!

The xiao long bao, as always, was good and I recommend biting the tip of the dumpling and sucking out the soup before eating the whole dumpling.

We also discovered chocolate lava xiao long baos! Instead of being filled with pork, these had liquid chocolate in them. Excellent for dessert!
