The head chef of Sembawang Traditional Claypot Rice has over 40 years of experience cooking claypot dishes.
Each claypot bowl is cooked to order where raw rice is cooked from scratch in the claypot over charcoal, so expect to wait for about 20-30 minutes for your dishes to arrive. If the crowd gets larger - which it usually does- the waiting time can go up to about an hour.
Most people go for the Traditional Claypot Rice which comes in 3 serving suggestions (small- 1 pax; medium- 2 pax; large- 3 pax). It is recommended to go with a large group in order to try the other specialities such as the JB’s San Lou Bee Hoon and the Curry Fish Head.

Cooked in the traditional way with rice, chicken, salted fish, chinese sausage and vegetables, the 20 minutes wait was pretty worth it.
I enjoyed the dish as a whole, but particularly loved the braised chicken pieces which were marinated using a mixture of various spices and herbs. Even the texture of the chicken remained tender despite the long cooking hours.
The highlight of every claypot rice dish is the burnt crispy bits of rice that sticks onto the sides and bottom of the claypot. Though there were enough charred bits for one person to enjoy, I wished it could have been crispier and firmer instead.
