Chicken House is one of the few places in Singapore that sells Kampong chicken and they’ve been in the chicken rice market since 2002. This special breed of chicken is different from your regular chicken as they feed on anything such as bugs and seeds instead of chicken feed. They are also allowed to roam freely instead of being confined to small cages or spaces. While this may mean that the chickens are much smaller than your usual chickens, the Kampong method of raising chicken ensures that their flesh is leaner, more delicate and sweeter as compared to the chicken you are used to eating. Despite Kampong chicken being a rare find in Singapore, Chicken House does not charge a premium for their chicken rice and sells it at reasonable, regular chicken rice prices.
When I was served the chicken rice set, my first impression was that the skin was significantly more yellow as compared to the chicken rice chicken that I am used to. While I was expecting the chicken flesh to be more on the tougher side, it was surprisingly extremely succulent and tender. It definitely was firmer than your usual chicken and I love how it also had a slightly springy texture. The plate of chicken was drenched in a simple sauce that was a mix of sweet and savoury and helped to elevate the flavour profile and the natural sweetness of the chicken. To get a different experience altogether, dunk the chicken in the other sauces provided such as sweet sauce, ginger and chilli. Be warned: the chilli is extremely spicy, so if your spice tolerance is low, do only taste a little bit of it at a time! However, if you love spicy food, you'll definitely be addicted to this sauce as it is extremely punchy, zesty and piquant. In terms of the rice, it was fluffy, fragrant and coated in an aromatic chicken oil that allowed it to pair well with the chicken. I also appreciate how it was not overly greasy. For the price point, the entire set at S$4.20 is definitely worth the money. It is rare to come across authentic Kampong chicken these days and the ones here at Chicken House are the real deal, yet affordably priced.
