Japan Rail Cafe is the first Japan-bound tourism theme cafe opened at Tanjong Pagar, just a stone’s throw away from the MRT station. Opened by the East Japan Railway Company, this cafe also serves as a place to promote Japan as a travel destination.

Apart from food and drinks, there is a retail section where you can get merchandise of the JR company like its famous trains, as well as travel brochures of Japan. In the past, you can also purchase your rail passes at the cafe too. Some people come here specially for the sake too.

The interior of the cafe looks conducive for doing some work and small-group discussion. However, when it becomes too busy during its peak hours, you are expected to not work/study there.

Kyoto Uji Matcha Latte

There were too many food and drink items on the menu that I actually took about 15 minutes to decide what I wanted to get, but I knew the Salmon Avocado Don was screaming at me, as well as the Poutine (Mentai Mayo) Fries. The bowl of Fries was more than enough if you are sharing this with friends, and a perfect side to go with before your mains. For the Salmon Avocado Don, I really enjoyed the slices of salmon and the grainy rice. It was also garnished with onions with a soup on the side. It was flavourful, filling and an all-round hearty meal.

For the drink, I had the Iced Royal Milk Tea which came with a scoop of whipped cream. Though shaped like an ice-cream, don’t be fooled by it. The milk tea was a little too sweet for my liking, but I did enjoyed the aroma and taste of the tea. It does tend to be a little crowded during meal hours, but it’ll be quite worth the wait. I’ll be back to try the other dishes, and maybe the sake options as well!
