Geylang Lorong 29 Hokkien Mee [Closed]
In the 1960s, Alex See started cooking Hokkien mee at Geylang Lor 29 with his father.
Eventually, he left to open his own shop, which is not to be mistaken with Swee Guan Hokkien Mee, which is run by his brother, Hock Siong.
In 2016, Alex eventually passed his apron to his youngest daughter, Penny, who began helping her family with the business since 2003. Now, she and her husband work hand in hand to run it together.
Eventually, Alex fell ill and was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer. He passed away on Nov 11, 2022.
No matter what, his legacy still remains on and people still enjoy coming to the stall to try the food. Both Penny and her husband have mastered the recipe so you can still taste the legendary flavours of this well-loved Hokkien mee.
Signature
I've heard many great things about the Hokkien mee here and was so glad to finally be able to come down and try it!
The coffee shop was crowded when I arrived that evening but thankfully, I managed to score myself a seat. Apart from Hokkien mee, I also got their Fried Oyster Omelette and Satay for more variety.
There are four size options for the Hokkien mee and I got the $10 plate for two. This was much larger than I expected and the portion size could definitely feed more than two.
Living up to all the rave reviews, the dish had plenty of wok hei and was packed with umami thanks to the rich prawn stock. The accompanying sambal also packed a punch and added a nice spicy kick to the dish.
I also really enjoyed the oyster omelette which contained fat chunks of oyster embedded in the egg.
The satay is a must-order too. They have a pork belly option, which is a tad bit more expensive than your regular satay but well-worth the price. The fat melts away in your mouth and it feels like you're biting into heaven.
