When it comes to old-school bakeries, Rich & Good Cake Shop comes to mind. Not only have they been around over 20-plus years, the famous cake shop is the go-to place for their fluffy and creamy Swiss rolls. Before operating at Jewel and online, they were situated at Kampong Glam where customers and loyal fans will queue for nothing less than 30-40minutes to get a roll of their cakes.
Most popular flavours have to be their Kaya Swiss roll and Durian Swiss roll, both can also be found at the Jewel outlet. There are also other flavours that are good and worth a try such as the Chocolate, Red Velvet, Mango and Strawberry Swiss roll. For the outlet at Jewel, they only sell the standardised long Swiss roll at $10 per piece. Usually, when I was there pre-COVID, there were options for a mini (half the size) at $5, which allowed for more variety choices. Do note that the recommended shelf life for these rolls are about 3 days only, so don’t be too greedy with your buys.
As the Swiss rolls get sold out rather quickly, be sure to head down to avoid disappointment. New batches are being sent in at different timings of the day, so I can’t really state when is the best time to head down. If you see a sign that says ‘Next Batch arriving at (insert timing here)’, my recommendation is to reach there 5-10 minutes earlier before the stipulated timing. And trust me, there will already be a queue forming.
Rich & Good Cake Shop also does online delivery and orders for weddings, anniversaries and baby showers.
I was introduced to Rich & Good Cake Shop about 6 years ago when I had one of the best - and I mean, really the best - Kaya Swiss roll ever. Not only was it soft and creamy, the coconut-pandan taste from the kaya is so fragrant and rich. The sponge cake exterior that wraps the jam fillings is light and fluffy, like a towel-like texture roll.
For the Durian flavour, the rich creamy during filling tastes like the actual durian meshed and mixed into this Swiss roll. It’s not too heavy and rich as compared to eating the flesh of a durian fruit alone, but I’d say a having two slices of the Swiss rolls is akin to a bite of an actual durian fruit. The sponge cake itself also has a slight durian flavour, which complements the taste of this tea-time snack, or even breakfast!
Even after trying the different flavours, I’d say their Kaya flavour is truly the best and one that is worth the 20-minute queue.
