Amongst the slew of traditional hawker stalls at Chinatown Complex, Pandastop stands out from the crowd by being the only one that sells modern bakes. At the front of the shop, a glass case neatly displays sweets including the likes of swiss rolls, cookies and cakes. The owner is a young lady called Jeanie and since young, she has loved visiting confectionery shops to admire their pastries. That was where her inspiration and passion for baking came from and it motivated her to learn how to bake her own treats. Jeanie first started doing so when she was 10 years old and she started out by making small batches of sweets for her family to try. Eventually, she went to the Institute of Technical Education to take up a pastry and baking course to hone her skills. After graduation, she joined a bakery and worked odd jobs to earn a substantial amount of money to set up her own confectionery shop and finally in 2019, she managed to do so.

If you love Japanese cakes, especially swiss rolls, this is a fantastic place to get them. All the cafe-standard goodies here are handmade and are created Japanese-style so the rolls are incredibly light, airy and fluffy. To cater to the elderly popular at Chinatown Complex, the treats here are thoughtfully baked with less sugar. This also makes it a great healthier dessert option! Choose from a variety of swiss roll flavours such as Coffee, Chocolate, Mango and Black Sesame. These are all made with fresh ingredients that are carefully sourced. The cream within each roll is also hand-whipped by Jeanie herself and is very light, creamy and of the perfect sweetness. This pairs well with the airy and fluffy sponge exterior that holds all the goodness together. My absolute favourite of the lot was the strawberry roll as it contained strawberry jam with real strawberries. If swiss rolls aren’t your thing, there are also other options such as cookies and kaya cake for you to choose from. They close at 3pm so get there early before it is too late!
