Xiao Mian Dian translates to “small noodle shop”, and this humble stall at Market Street Hawker Centre is an extremely popular and affordable option for the office workers at the CBD area. They sell a variety of handmade noodle dishes which include the likes of Pork Rib Noodles, Mushroom Noodles and the classic Ban Mian. As the food sold here is also relatively healthy, it makes it a huge plus point for people who are watching their waistlines. While the owners of the stall have employed staff to work there instead of doing so themselves, the food still turns out consistently good each and every time, explaining the high demand for their food.
I can honestly say that this is one of the best ban mians I’ve had in Singapore thus far, which is something that I was not expecting. The texture of the handmade noodles is fantastic and it was thick, chewy and smooth. Despite being left out for quite some time, it did not get soggy easily and still maintained a nice firmness. The soup was also surprisingly not as bland as I expected it to be and was really rich and slightly creamy thanks to the egg that had been broken into the mix. I also really loved how generous they were with the amount of mincemeat that they gave in each bowl and these were very juicy with just the right amount of fat to meat ratio. For some added spice, you can opt to add a little chilli but be warned: the chilli is very spicy and it left me with a numb lip. However, it’s great for people who find the soup a little too bland for their liking and want to spice things up.
