Bukit Panjang Dessert is a family-run business that has been around for decades. Currently, it is run by a bunch of young hawkerpreneurs who took over the business from their grandfather’s legacy. Following his recipes closely, the youngsters meticulously replicate the traditional desserts so that these can be passed down from generation to generation. The stall, while called Bukit Panjang Dessert, is located at the bustling Marsiling Mall Hawker Centre. On the menu are 22 different local desserts such as ice kachang, bubu hitam and bobo charchar, with both cold and hot options available. Truly nostalgic!

Traditional desserts are a dying trade, so it’s heartwarming to see youngsters want to keep their grandparent’s legacy alive by running this stall. As a fan of ice kachang, I decided to try their rendition of the dessert to see how it matches up to the other ones that I’ve tried. This was prepared for me on the spot and I was quite impressed by how generous the serving size was for the portion — you could easily share it with another person. For the uninitiated, ice kachang is a shaved ice dessert, with the base filled with various ingredients like red bean and jelly. The shaved ice portion is also doused in flavored syrup with typical colors like pink, green and yellow. Bukit Panjang Dessert’s version was refreshing with just the right amount of sweetness — perfect for a sweltering hot day in Singapore!
