Soi 19 Wanton Mee was established in December 2012, with the original stall located at Ang Mo Kio.

A store in Bangkok called Sabx2 Wanton Mee is often mistaken to be related to them, to the point where it has put up signs saying “No Branch in Singapore” in hopes of differentiating the two.

The founder of Soi 19 is Mr Ng Sing Chow and as of now, his son and daughter, Alex and Claire, run the show at all 4 of their outlets. It’s surprising to know that Mr Ng had no prior experience in the F&B scene before this — he started out in the footwear business! — and he learned how to cook Thai-style wanton mee from his Thai Godbrother in Bangkok.

While the recipe is Thai, Soi 19 adds several local elements to the dish to give it a Singapore touch, such as sausage and char siew. It took a lot of experimentation (almost 2 years!) but finally, Mr Ng perfected the recipe. After almost a decade, they’ve expanded and now have 4 stalls islandwide.

Signature

Bean Sprout, Fried Pork Rice, Homemade Thai Fried Pork, Lettuce, Luncheon Meat Fries, Thai Pork Sausage, Thai Wanton Mee

I’ll admit that I didn’t have the highest expectations for the wanton mee here because I used to eat a lot of it when I would visit Bangkok during pre-Covid times. However, I was proven wrong. The wanton noodles here had a delightfully spring texture that was akin to what you could get in Thailand. The noodles were tossed in a savoury sauce that was packed full of umami. I also really liked the ingredients tossed into the mix, which consisted of sausages, char siew, green vegetables, pork lard and fried wantons. I especially enjoyed the addition of the sausages which had a surprising caramelised taste.

I also tried the chicken, which was similar to local chicken rice chicken. The meat isn’t as tender as chicken rice chicken but it was decently juicy, with the soy sauce it was drenched in adding a slightly sweet touch to the meat.
Additionally, I added on a plate of their pork sausages. These were different from the sausages that were included in the wanton noodles and had a stronger spice taste.

For drinks, they have Thai milk tea but I decided to go for aiyu jelly instead and this was very refreshing, quenching my thirst after such a hearty meal! I can definitely foresee myself coming back here, especially on days when I miss Thailand.
