Mixed rice — more commonly known in Singapore as cai fan — is a classic Chinese local dish which consists of rice paired with a variety of dishes. These stalls usually feature a myriad of different dishes that are neatly lined up behind a transparent case and diners get to pick and choose what they want. This concept can similarly be found in Malay cuisine and is known as nasi padang.

But Thai-style mixed rice? Completely unheard of in Singapore, that was until Basil & Mint. Located at the bustling Amoy Street Food Centre right smack in the middle of the Central Business District (CBD), Basil & Mint offers a small but substantial range of Thai dishes and diners get to DIY their orders and pair these dishes with rice. The dishes are also extremely affordably priced, where each serving of rice, noodles, vegetables or egg costs around $1 while meat and salad cost around $2. Soup, curry or seafood costs $3. It’s run by a very nice lady boss called Vee who is very generous!

I miss Thailand so much and I was thrilled to find this stall at Amoy Street Food Centre that sells mixed rice-style Thai food. I enjoyed having the flexibility to choose what dishes to pair with rice — you can also choose noodles or romaine lettuce if you aren't feeling grains! — and opted for the creamy salmon scrambled eggs and a selection of vegetables like kang kong. I really enjoyed the salmon — especially the cream sauce it was doused in, as it has hints of Thai spice flavours! It’s also overall quite healthy as well as there are plenty of greens to choose from. For the selection, it’s really quite worth a visit.
