Han Kee Fish Soup is not an unfamiliar name to the people working in the Central Business District. This famous stall has one of the longest queues anyone has ever seen for a hawker stall in Singapore and the line can have up to almost 50 people during lunch time. Taking charge of the queues is a feisty auntie who can come off as pretty intimidating, but you have to hand it to her; she’s fantastic at keeping the crowd organised. It’s also a well-known fact that Han Kee Fish Soup’s main competitor in the very same hawker centre is Piao Ji Fish Porridge, another sliced fish stall that also attracts a massive crowd during peak hours.
The queues can admittedly come off as intimidating, but I can confidently say that it is worth the long waiting time. I doubt that there is any other sliced soup stall in Singapore that has sliced fish that is as thick and as fresh as the ones here at Han Kee Fish Soup. They use Batang fish, also known as Spanish Mackerel, which is similar to many other brands that sell fish soup in Singapore. However, the difference is that the ones here are firmer, chunkier and sweeter than what you can typically find anywhere else. They are also very generous with the amount of sliced fish given in each bowl, making it even more value-for-money. While many places provide the option of adding milk to the soup, the folks at Han Kee don’t have that. However, it’s really not necessary as the broth here, while light, is packed full of sweetness and flavour from the fish. You can also opt to pair this with a bowl of rice for a more filling meal.
