With about a 70 year-long history, Teochew-style braised duck Heng Gi Goose and Duck Rice is said to be one of the best duck rice stalls out there. The stall was originally owned by Uncle Yang who is said to be doing this for 60 over years since he was a kid, originally located at Hill Street Food Centre. Now, the food is cooked by his disciples and located at a more central area at Tekka Centre, just a stone’s throw away from Little India MRT station.

Unfortunately, the shop doesn’t sell Goose meet anymore, apparently due to supply issues. But be glad that their braised duck is so good that it can sustain its customers despite one less main item is off the menu. Additionally, its affordable price makes it a more enjoyable treat.

While it doesn’t have long queues like some of the other stalls there, there is a constant string of customers that patronize the stall, ranging from older folks to young office workers. While the bright yellow sign isn’t exactly the most eye-catching sign out there, the food and taste is what people go back for. Finding a place at the food centre can be tough, but loads of good food and drinks there.

I went during the peak lunchtime hour and so the queue for Heng Gi Goose and Duck was a tad long, but not a snaking queue that would deter me to leave. At an affordable price of #3.50 per plate of duck rice, I thought was well worth it for the amount of duck slices, and of course the taste of the food.

It’s called a Teochew style because it serves white rice with the braised dark sauce poured over the rice. It also has a light consistency that tends to be saltier than most of the duck rice stalls around Singapore.

I thoroughly enjoyed it mainly because it’s not too rich, and has quite a balanced aftertaste. The duck slices are chewy where the sauce has been braised through. The portion is generous enough for one person but towards the end of the meal, I felt the saltiness was a tad too much for me, maybe because of the sauce and sauce on the rice as well.
