There aren’t many stalls left in Singapore that still makes its fishballs and fishcakes by hand, and Self-made Fishball at Berseh Food Centre is one that shows why it’s different. Other than noodles being a comfort food to many – whether you opt for dry or soup options, it is no doubt that this flavourful bowl of goodness is worth the price and wait.
The food centre itself has a pretty good number of delicious food stalls, and so it does get rather crowded during lunch periods. The queue line for this stall is usually long, so be sure to be prepared to wait for a while for your bowl of noodles.
There are a few options to choose from, from the normal bowl of fishball noodles, to shrimp dumpling soup and even chicken feet noodle soup. There are options for add-ons like fishcake and fishball as well. The shop owners there are very experienced, whipping up the orders in a fast turnaround time.
Signature
When I was there around lunch time, there was about 4 people in front of me. In about slightly less than 15 minutes, it was my turn and got my food very quickly. The stall uncle was very upbeat and greets his customers warmly. I ordered the fish ball noodle soup and added on their homemade fish cake. I’d always recommend a dry option as the soup served on the side in my opinion, always tastes sweeter. The noodles, coated with chilli and oil had a nice chewiness to it, and wasn’t cluttered together. Of course, the highlight of the dish – fish ball and fish cake, both had a really tasty and slightly salty aftertaste, but the texture is so bouncy that I really loved. The fish meat used is fresh and doesn’t have that strong ‘fishy’ taste, but rather a tinge of sweetness that just makes one really happy.
