The business is helmed by Tay Que Huak and Koh Git Tia, a husband-and-wife duo who have been in the local food scene for years.
The business itself has been around since 1956 and was founded by Mr Tay's father, who started out by selling the dish on the streets of Bukit Timah.
Would you believe that the dish was actually an accident? The family was supposed to sell fishball noodles but one day, Mr Tay's father brought home satay and there was leftover sauce. They ended up cooking it with the noodles and it was a huge success!
Mr Tay himself stopped going to school when he was 14 so he could pick up skills from his father and by 16, he was already selling his own satay bee hoon.
While the recipe has been passed down for generations, it also has been tweaked after advice from the businesses' customers.
The brand will be passed on to the couple's daughter who helped out at the stall right after she graduated from Ngee Ann Poly.
Satay bee hoon is not as commonly found in Singapore as dishes like minced meat noodles and chicken rice.
I've heard plenty about Sin Chew Satay Bee Hoon, which coincidentally is near my house! So I had to try it for myself.
I actually visited the stall just a few minutes before they opened and there were already a few people waiting to place their order. Thank goodness I managed to do so too!
Before even tasting the food, my mouth was already watering from just smelling it. And it tasted as good as it looked! The thick, textured satay gravy sauce had a nutty, sweet and earthy flavour that mixed well with the thin bee hoon. The dish is also dotted with ingredients like prawns, sliced pork and vegetables so you get a little bit of everything in each bite. I can see why people would queue so long for this!
