This shop simply sells 2 items - black or white carrot cake, in various serving portions, but don’t be fooled by its simplicity because this stall has a constant snaking queue of customers who are willing to wait for half an hour for a plate of carrot cake.

Opened in the 1960s in Tiong Bahru, the stall in now manned by the son and his young grandson (in his twenties) to fry and take orders. Each time, a new batch is fried while the other person in the stall takes orders down the line. Sometimes two woks are being used at the same time to speed up the process. From $4 a plate, this Fried Carrot Cake is worth the trip to the West!

I ordered the plate of white carrot cake and although I did wait long (approximately 20 minutes) for my order, I didn’t mind it as it was a delicious meal that made me happy. The radish cake is soft but doesn’t break when you scoop it on your spoon. The eggs and cai poh (preserved radish) added a nice texture and crunch to it.

While it sounds simple, there has to be something special in their sauce or radish cake for the flavours were balanced perfectly, even the chilli was heavenly. The $4 portion was enough for 1 person, but because it wasn’t too heavy on the palate, it may not be enough for a hungry human who queued for 30 minutes.
