Wah Kee Big Prawn Noodles offers bowls from $5, $10, $15, $20, to $25. To really get a taste as to why this is a Michelin-award stall at Pek Kio Market and Food Centre, go for the at least the $10 bowl.

Run by an elderly couple who have been in the business for over 50 years, their bowls get sold out pretty quickly. The big prawn soup is definitely the speciality, having cooked and simmered the broth using fresh seafood instead of pork ribs. Known for their palm-size prawns, the auntie also shared with me that their prawns are all sea-caught/wild-caught to ensure the freshness of their main ingredient. That also explains why the different price category bowls get sold out even before 1pm!

Expect to queue and wait for your bowl of prawn noodles.

This has got to be my most expensive bowl of prawn noodles for 1.

The auntie is known for her grumpy and straightforward character but I had a different experience. She told the people in line rather loudly that they left with $15-$25 bowls. While most people left the queue, I stayed and gave my order. She double-checked with me again, smiled and even asked me to sit while her husband starts to prepare my bowl. She even recognised a customer and asked if he enjoyed the meal.

The noodles was good with lots of pork lard, but my 3 big prawns were the star. They were large and chewy, dunked in the orange-crimson-like soup that had an intense and robust umami flavour which was unlike anything I’d ever tried.
