Choon Hiang actually used to be located in Macpherson before moving to East Coast Lagoon Village in 1979. It is run by a lady called Aunty Mui Mui who used to help her mum cook at their family stall in Macpherson since she was just 12 years old. These days, her husband is the one who works with her in the kitchen and he helps serve customers, take orders and prepare the food. Her daughter also intends to take over the business from her eventually. With over 40 years of experience under her belt, it isn’t surprising that Aunty Mui Mui is a pro at what she does. The stall sells 4 specific dishes — Fried Kway Teow, Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee, Fried Rice and Mee Goreng. Prices here also range from $4 to $8 depending on the size you order.
I was torn between trying the fried kway teow and hokkien mee here but eventually chose the latter. I got the $5 portion and the plate was neatly piled with a generous serving of fried hokkien noodles. This was made up with a combination of bee hoon and yellow noodles with the addition of ingredients such as prawns, eggs and spring onions. When it comes to hokkien mee, the broth used to cook the dish is very important and the one here was packed with umami, adding plenty of flavour and depth to the dish. The accompanying chilli also packs a punch and is zesty, spicy and pungent all at once. Definitely a must-try dish when you visit this hawker centre in the East!
