The stall has been around for years and has been passed down from generation to generation within the family.
They specialise in putu piring, which for the uninitiated, is a soft and airy Malay sweet that is similar to the Chinese traditional sweet tutu kueh.
Aisha is currently the fifth-generation owner of the business and she even sacrificed her childhood dream of becoming a pastry chef — she had even had been an assistant pastry chef in Massachusetts prior to taking over the business! — just to help her family carry on the tradition of selling this fast-disappearing Malay sweet. As she had picked up the art of making putu piring just after she finished her PSLE, she undoubtedly was one of the best people to take over the family buisness.
Today, Haig Road Putu Piring is the name people think of when they crave for this old-school Malay dessert and it even was featured in the Netflix series “Street Food” — what a huge accomplishment!
Apart from the classic gula melaka, they sell other flavours like chocolate, coconut and durian. I love gula melaka so this was definitely up my alley. While it's typically a very sweet, concentrated filling, the gula melaka here was not overwhelming and was also mellowed out by the rice flour. You also can tell that they use very high-quality gula melaka based on just the taste alone and it was sweet with a slight smokiness.
As a fan of durian, the durian putu piring piqued my interest too and it is made using high-quality D24 durian paste. Overall, the filling adds a nice contrast to the light and airy exterior without being too cloying.
