Rebus in Malay means “to blanch”, thus mee rebus refers to “blanched noodles”. Afandi Hawa and Family stall is among the many stalls at Haig Road Market & Food Centre, known to be a destination for Malay cuisine. You may not notice their green stall at first glance but their mee rebus is a popular dish you will be able to spot customers enjoying it at nearly every corner of the hawker place.

The shop first opened at the old Paya Lebar Airport in 1967 and is now helmed by Ahmad, the son of founder, Afandi Ahmad. Their signature mee rebus gravy is cooked daily with added ingredients such as shrimp, flower crab, and mutton on top of the usual mixture, to enhance its flavour.

Mee Rebus

I patronised the stall during the peak of the lunch hour and glad there wasn’t a long queue for my plate of the signature mee rebus. I went with high expectations and wasn’t disappointed. The gravy was definitely thicker than usual but still felt light on the palate. I didn’t manage to make out much of the crab or mutton flavours, but definitely a sweeter and nuttier taste than the ones I used to have.

To my delight, the dish actually comes with a whole egg which is rather generous for the price!
