Ivan’s Porridge caters mainly to the morning and lunch crowd as they close their shop rather early in the afternoon. It is hard to find a stall like this that sells Cantonese-style porridge (thick and mushy style) at a cheap price. From $2.50 a bowl, it is no wonder this stall is always filled with people queuing up for their orders. The stall has been around for quite some time now, and their popular dishes include pork porridge, sliced fish porridge and chicken porridge.
The stall owners who are also the cooks, prepare each bowl individually, cooking and stirring the porridge from time to time to ensure its consistency. While the raw ingredients aren’t that expensive, making porridge is rather labour-intensive and this stall definitely lives up to the standard of being one of the highly sought-after stalls selling porridge in Singapore.
I ordered the Century Egg with Pork Porridge because I just loved a century egg in my porridge, and pork felt like a safe choice. No regrets though there are reviews talking about their fish options are as good as well. What I believe makes Ivan’s Porridge such a hot favourite among its customers is the smooth and light congee. Though the thick Cantonese porridge is something I prefer over the Teochew style porridge (rice with water), I appreciated that my bowl wasn’t thick slabs of gruel. In fact, the texture was so smooth I could say it was creamy.
Portion-wise, there were thick slices of century egg and heaps of pork chunks, which made it all the more worth it. For this price, there isn’t much to complain about.
