The longest-running tu tu kueh stall in Singapore, Tan's Tu Tu Coconut Cake is now run by Tan Bee Hua, the daughter of the late Tan Yong Fa, who is quite the OG (original) - founder of the tutu kueh himself. With over 80 years of history behind this shop, Mdm Tan is the sole person running two shops daily - one at Havelock Road and the other at Clementi.
The recipe has not changed since and everything is handmade, and made from scratch - even the fillings that go into the tutu kueh. From preparation to operation, she takes about at least 10-12 hours a day to make sure the tutu kuehs are of her standards, which explains why people are willing to wait 15-30 minutes for their orders.
Options of peanut, coconut, original (plain) and chocolate are available.
Signature
One of the best tutu kuehs I’d ever had. Period
Perhaps because everything is handmade which makes the taste and flavour of this pillowy snack such a delight to eat. I personally enjoyed peanut and plain fillings but her chocolate ones were pretty good as well.
The flour, in my opinion, is the most important part of the tutu kueh and each bite was so satisfying I dare say it’s perfect. The flour wraps the filling just right that it doesn’t overpower the taste and texture. Although best consumed fresh out from the steamer, I actually popped in a few after a few hours and was surprisingly glad that it didn’t harden or dry up as much I thought it would. It was still chewy and the peanut fillings still had that crunch you look for in every bite.
