Soh Kee Cooked Food is a rather under-the-radar stall but it has been a hot hit amongst Westies who know of it. The humble, decades-old shop was only popularised recently when it was listed in the Michelin Bib Gourmand 2021. They specialise in tender chicken but instead of pairing it with rice like most places do, they do so with homely bowls of porridge that are prepared in-house. These come in various flavours like cuttlefish, chicken and fish. These are also extremely affordably priced and there are also sets available, making the food here a good group-sharing option. There tends to be a long queue but it does move rather quickly as the store workers are very fast and efficient.
Signature
1 Pax Set, Chicken Porridge
I ordered the mixed porridge ($3) and chicken porridge ($2) as well as a plate of chicken for two. The porridge is on the granier side and feels like a mix between thick Cantonese porridge and watery Teochew porridge, which I found very interesting. Despite the affordable price point, each bowl was loaded with a copious amount of ingredients and was very filling by itself. The chicken, on the other hand, was surprisingly tender, as if it had been poached. I usually don’t enjoy eating the skin on steamed chicken as I find it slimy but I had no qualms about polishing off the ones here. I also really love the chilli sauce, so remember to get it! Overall, it isn’t a flashy hawker store with tons of exciting menu items and instead, the food here warms the belly and leaves one feeling content and nostalgic.
