Old Nonya is a family-run business that is helmed by a couple called Toby and Ruby. Their daughter helps out with their social media pages.

Toby learned to cook all the Malay-influenced Peranakan dishes at Old Nyonya from his aunt, who has already retired at the age of 90. He also starts the food preparations way before the stall opens and comes down early in the morning to do do so, which isn't easy to do.

The stall sells a series of authentic and nostalgic Peranakan-style dishes like curry chicken, chicken rendang, lontong, laksa and mee siam.

As I grew up with Peranakan grandmothers, Peranakan food has a special place in my heart and invokes a sense of nostalgia in me. So, I'm always happy to see eateries that sell it to keep the tradition running.

Old Nyonya is truly an underrated gem at Maxwell Food Centre and I was spoilt for choice when ordering my food. I eventually settled on the Chicken Rendang simply because I couldn't resist the massive slab of rendang chicken that was pictured on the menu.

This definitely lived up to what I envisioned and I was presented with a plate of warm, fluffy rice served with the glorious rendang chicken as well as a side of achar (preserved vegetables), cucumber slices, an egg as well as some crackers. The chicken was fork-tender and extremely moist and juicy, pairing well with the rich, complex and viscous rendang sauce.

It truly was a hearty meal and I am planning to come back to try their laksa and curry chicken!
