Hoe Kee used to be a popular suppertime spot as they opened from 7am to 2am but their opening hours have since changed and they now only operate from 7am to 4pm. This porridge stall is in constant competition with another popular porridge stall in Maxwell Food Centre — Zhen Zhen Pork Porridge— and there is always a debate on who sells the better porridge. It is said that the porridge here at Hoe Kee has a lighter, cleaner taste than that at Zhen Zhen. They have quite an extensive menu too with options like Sliced Fish Porridge, Mixed Pork Porridge and the very interesting Claypot Frog Porridge. Apart from that, they also sell a range of dim sum that you can pair with your porridge!

I got myself a bowl of their mixed pork porridge ($3.50) which came loaded with a variety of pork. In all honesty, I usually don’t have much expectations for porridge as to me, they generally taste the same. However, the one here at Hoe Kee Porridge blew me away and my dining partner can attest to that! For one, the porridge base was super thick and creamy — it might possibly be one of the smoothest porridges I’ve had in Singapore to date. The ingredients were also fresh and not overcooked, adding a nice savouriness to the porridge. I also like how they top each bowl with plenty of ingredients like spring onions, fried shallots and dark sauce. For the price point, this is truly a steal and I can foresee myself eating here again.
