China Street Fritters is famous for being one of the few stalls in Singapore that sell authentic Hokkien-style ngoh hiang. The shop is currently helmed by 64-year-old Huang Guo Hua and he runs it with his wife and brothers. Originally, it was owned by Mr Huang’s father and the shop has a rich history of over 70 years. The family has stuck with the same recipe for years and this has been passed down for generations. Just recently, they were actually in the news because they wanted to sell their shop to someone for a million dollars because the family wants to retire — what a huge amount of money! For the uninitiated, ngoh hiang refers to meat rolls and apart from that, these are usually sold along with other delicious fried snacks like pink Hokkien sausage, liver rolls and egg slices. Do try them by the original owners before it is passed over to the new buyer!

They have different sets for sale here at China Street Fritters but you can also opt to customise your own plate of ngoh hiang, which is what I did. I got ingredients such as egg slices, meat rolls, bean curd, and sausage, with the total bill amounting up to less than $5 — what a steal! I really enjoyed the meat rolls here which are packed with spices and flavours. The egg slices were also an interesting element as I’ve not tried such an ingredient before. I thought these would be similar to the Japanese tamagoyaki but they were actually fried, giving it a lovely crisp texture! These go perfectly with the provided sauces and I especially loved the chilli sauce which was not too spicy and had a slight sweetness to it.
