Nan Jing Street Bak Kut Teh has an extremely rich history. The owner of the stall, Mdm Teo, used to be a kitchen helper at Ong Say Bak Kut Teh, one of the original stalls in Singapore that sold herbal-style Hokkien bak kut teh.

Ong Say Bak Kut Teh closed in 1989 and Mdm Teo decided to branch out on her own. She got the legendary recipe from her boss, who encouraged her to run the stall on her own, so you can expect authentic flavours of the Hokkien-style bak kut teh that was popular back in the 1980s.

Apart from bak kut teh, other dishes you can expect to try here include Braised Pig Trotter, Pig's Tail Soup and Pig's Kidney Soup. There are also salted vegetables, peanuts and you tiao to help you enhance your meal.

I'm more used to the commonly-found herbal bak kut teh, so chancing upon herbal bak kut teh was a rare but delightful find.

It's evident that the bak kut teh here has been boiled for hours because the dark broth had an extremely rich, herbal taste that was very soothing. Dig into the soup and you'll find chunks of meat pork ribs which are tender and fall-off-the-bone. Such soup is best paired with rice, which is what I did. I also enjoyed my soup with some crisp pieces of you tiao for a little texture variation. Overall, a very humble yet satisfactory meal and it is sad to know that such dishes are slowly disappearing from Singapore due to the lack of hawkers.
