Think of Wu Xiang as the fried version of Yong Tao Foo, a wide variety of ingredients, fried – and deep fried to perfection, paired with a plate of bee hoon to go with it. Whether is it for breakfast, a meal on its own, or simply an addition to your meals to share with friends and family.

Located at Maxwell Food Centre, there are many stalls of a wide variety of food to choose from. Many award-winning stalls as well are located there, so definitely a tough competition for any stalls to be there. For He Ji Wu Xiang, it is a popular stall with a long history, and with the queue of people, usually customers of an older age, it does give this stall the credit of having a taste that suits the local senior customer base.

The ordering process may look confusing, but there are set meal options to aid in the process, or opt to customize what you enjoy in terms of ingredients offered. The old uncle who runs the stall isn’t the friendliest, but by his skill set and how quick he fries for each order, you can tell that he has been in this business for many years. The years of experience is apparent in his skillset. The many paper cutouts and award certification on the stall front proves that this stall is a customer-favourite. Of course, the chilli-mixed gravy with crushed peanut as the dipping sauce is crucial for this Wu Xiang dish.

This may not be the first option when it comes to a brunch meal or lunch, but a bowl of Wu Xiang is a unique and a spread of delicious food. I chose the set options and added ingredients that I personally liked. From fish sticks, fishball, ngoh hiang, prawn fritters, etc.

The ingredients are chewy and with the gravy, there is a sweet and salty aftertaste that is perfect for a brunch meal. However, some of the foods were deep-fried a bit too long, and it can be really oily with each bite.

The Bee Hoon, however was fried with dark sauce, giving it a nice fluffy texture with every bite. Meant to be eaten with the fried dishes, this is one that the dish speaks for itself, making it a favourite local meal.
