The owner of the stall, Mdm Khoo, has been in the business for over 25 years after taking over her father’s business. Her father himself has been in the trade for 30 years and learnt the recipe from his father-in-law. She currently runs the stall with her husband. She only used to sell white carrot cake but has since branched out to sell black carrot cake too. While some carrot cake stalls allow mixed carrot cake, Song Zhou unfortunately does not. So, if you want to have a taste of both versions of the dish, you have to order two separate plates. You can also chose to add prawn and extra egg to your carrot cake.

Signature

Fried Carrot Cake

I got the black carrot cake here and I was honestly curious to see why some people consider this one of the best carrot cakes in Singapore. After tasting this plate of carrot cake, I finally understood why. The carrot cake was moist, fluffy and slightly sweet thanks to the copious amount of dark sauce used. It also had a strong wok hei element that really hits the spot. Though simple, it really was an impactful dish and is probably one of my favourite carrot cake dishes in Singapore now. I really understand the hype! I regret not adding prawns to it — I’m sure that would have been delicious!
